IZU Trip Feb 11/06

Wow, having a GPS onboard is a real treat as you can see below.

I went down the west coast and up the middle of the Izu penninsula, as you can see above. Garmin's map software makes it easy to upload your tracks from the GPS and see where you went. This was the first real trip with the Legend C onboard. Once I got confused because the GPS was locked up due to me likely pressing a button and not knowing it. However, once I figured that out, the GPS was really helpful letting me know where we were.

I met 4 Tokyo Riders after the toll booth at Numazu, and after some introductions, we headed through the city to the penninsula's fine coastal roads. In the group was a Triumph Speed Triple, a Honda CB750, a Yamaha Fazer 1000, a Kawasaki ZZR1200, and my old K100RS.

Just after getting out of the city we stopped at a lovely harbour with a view north of Mt. Fuji as you see below.

We soon carried on with some heavy traffic for awhile, then opening up on some amazing curvy mountain roads where we were able to really carve out some corners. Then we stopped at the lovely rest spot with the view you see below.

It was a lovely clear day, and quite warm for this time of year. I think it went up to around 12 C. We then stopped for lunch at the next town and had some fine Japanese food. After that we had some more heavy traffic for awhile until we got further down near the south end and enjoyed more traffic free winding roads with extreme hills and curves. I was just getting reaquainted with riding a big bike so I was taking it easy, but some of my riding friends were really blasting up ahead. This was serious riding and I had to be very careful. After awhile I started to feel a bit more comfortable on these curves, and overall I had a great time riding.

We stopped at another lookout in the extreme south west corner and got the view you see below.

The Speed Triple is quite an amazing little corner carver. It's short, light and powerful with some pretty awesome pipes and headlights. I would not want to ride on the back of it though.

This is what happens after riding the Speed Triple - permanent crouch position. Nice suit!

I'd like to thank the group for waiting up for me so many times ;-) I enjoyed meeting and chatting with all of you. I hope I can join you guys on many more rides this year. Cheers!

Tire Report: What used to be brand new BT45Vs are now well scuffed in. It's no wonder the front scallops - you can see the wear already on the back of each tread block. I think these tires tell the story of the types of roads on this trip. They're obviously not going to last long at this rate, but I love the way they bite into the curves.
