Rectifier Installation Notes

This section is intended to help installers avoid problems that could cause damage to the rectifier, due to the installation. The second section on this page is the Warranty Terms.

Eastern Beaver test ALL rectifier for correct operation before shipping. We test for output voltage and current ( under load ) and cycle the rectifier 10 times. Further, we test for leakage current as can often occur on non Shindengen rectifiers. Leakage current is internal leakage in the rectifier that adds to the current drawn by the bike when the ignition is off. Most bike draw less than 1.5mA when the ignition if off ( older bikes without ECU's can be 0mA ). Cheap rectifiers often draw between 0.9mA and 2mA, which added to the ECU standby current can result in a flat battery after 2 weeks or more of non use ( unless a trickle charger is used ). It is important to check leakage current as well as output voltage/current to verify rectifiers.

CONNECTOR NOTES:
90% of the rectifier connectors on the internet today, are copies of the original Furukawa QLW series.. However, the pins are not made of the same material, nor
the quality the same as the originals. Further, the connectors are often very difficult to fit and remove often resulting in the latch not being latched between the connector and the rectifier. We highly recommend only using original Furukawa QLW connectors as fitted to motorcycles from the factory.

INSTALLATION RECOMMENDATION:
Some important installation factors are:
- ( i refer to rectifier/regulators as rectifiers on this page for simplicity ).

  1. Air flow ( Convection ) - rectifiers generate heat in sinking unused current to ground ( unless they are series type ie SH847 which act more like a 'water tap' in controlling the amount of current taken from the stator ) when no current is required by the bike, but which still needs some convection for cooling. Because of this all rectifiers need air flow. Rectifiers should never be installed where the air flow around the device would be blocked. This is part of the reason why some bike have high failure rates of rectifier, due to poor selection of location for the rectifier mount by the motorcycle designers. If your are installing a SH847 or FH020AA rectifier on a bike it was not originally fitted to, this should be an important consideration.
  2. Vibration - motorcycles generate a lot of vibrations, some from the engine, some from the road surface and some from wind, out of balance wheels, poor maintenance etc. Mounting a rectifier such that it is not very securely mounted to the frame, can amplify these vibration leading to premature failure. usually OEM mount position are good on this point. However, for customers installing the rectifiers in non original positions, it is highly recommended that they ensure that the rectifier is firmly mounted to the frame or sub-frame of the bike. Poor selection of mounting position or poor mounting can cause failure.
  3. Mount Stresses - for applications where the rectifier was not the OEM type or is to be installed in other than the OEM position, it is imperative that the mount surface be flat. Bolting a rectifier in a position where the mounts are out of alignment by a fraction of a mm or more, can put undue stress on the casing/electronics and lead to failure. Ensure that both mount points are flush.
  4. Furukawa QLW Connectors - these days about 80% of QLW connectors advertised on internet sales sites are copies. They are a cheap price and usually sub par on quality. The pins are made from cheaper material with thinner plating and cannot safely conduct the maximum current that the rectifier can supply. The pins are also often slightly out of spec compared to the originals. Further, the connectors themselves are not exactly the same dimensions as the originals, leading to difficulty in connecting and disconnecting the connectors. They can also be made of non UL approved materials that are flammable, putting your expensive motorcycle or vehicle at risk. We highly recommend against using copies of QLW connectors on high current applications such as motorcycle rectifiers ( up to 50A )
  5. Before mounting replacement rectifiers to motorcycles, make the electrical connection and verify that the battery is being charged. Note that initially ( first few minutes, if the battery is weak, the voltage will slowly increase. Please also note, that one some bikes, that have a voltage display on the meter, the meter voltage will display a lower voltage than the actual battery voltage. As an example the Ducati 848 Street Fight shows 13.6v on the meter, when the battery charge voltage is around 14.2v.
  6. Never run the motorcycle for longer than 3 minutes, when the rectifier is not mounted to the frame. The aluminum housing of the rectifier dissipates heat though the mount points ( to the frame or mount plate ) and through convection, from the body.

RECTIFIER WARRANTY TERMS:
  1. Rectifiers installed as OEM replacements in OEM locations ( on the motorcycle ) are warranted for 60 days from purchase, from Eastern Beaver. VIN number and pictures of the installation will be require for Warranty claims.
  2. Rectifiers installed in non OEM locations or where the rectifier is was not supplied as OEM on the motorcycle ( such as where upgrading the rectifier to a better quality or spec ) are warranted for 30 day from shipping from Eastern Beaver, provided original Furukawa QLW connectors are used AND the mount position and style is as per Above INSTALLATION notes.
  3. Warranty on non Shingengen rectifiers is 90 days from the date of shipping from Eastern Beaver. This warranty is longer due, not to better quality, but to a lower purchase price from the distributor, allowing for a little higher margin & thus more warranty costs.
  4. Warranty on non Shingengen rectifiers is limited to a replacement rectifier of the same type, and only once. There are situations where a failed battery ( internal short on one ore more cells ) or other wiring issue ( intermittent connection etx ) can cause short circuits on the rectifier output, leading to failure.
  5. Liability on rectifier sales, is limited to the original purchase price.
  6. When a rectifier failure occurs, Eastern Beaver will request;

Clear picture of the installation location.
Clear pictures of the QLW connectors.
    Clear pictures of the wiring.
Motorcyle VIN number, Make, Model, Year.

  7. Warranty is cancelled where there is physical damage to the returned rectifier. This is often the case when non original QLW connectors are used, as they are difficult to connect to the rectifier and even more difficult to remove. Installers often use a screw driver to pry them off, damaging the rectifier.
  8. Shipping costs are excluded from warranty. Only the rectifier cost is covered.
  9. We can ship advance replacement, where the buyer pays the replacement rectifier cost in advance, which is then refunded, once the fault & warranty status is confirmed, that is once we receive the faulty rectifier and confirm warranty status and reported fault. Alternatively, the faulty rectifier can be shipped back to Eastern Beaver at the buyers cost. Once the fault and warrnty status are confirmed, a replacement rectifier of the same type will be shipped out.
  10. Where a rectifier is returned & the fault is not confirmed at Eastern Beaver, the warranty claim is rejected. We will return the rectifier to the customer at the customer cost.

Lastly, we would like to offer better terms on Shidnengen rectifiers, so are discussing with OEM dealers to achieve such. Currently these terms above are the best we can offer, due to the terms we receive from our supplier.
